I planted two vine-type plants at each side....one each Bleeding Hearts and Confederate Jasmine.

The photos above and below are from yesterday....the delicate bleeding hearts.....a heart-shaped flower with a blood red blossom out the bottom is one of my favorites. The blooms have replaced the Confederate Jasmine and their heady thick lovely smell from just two to three weeks ago.

Perhaps, now that I am retired I'll do more to make my yard look good.....Certainly needed!

By-the-way....and from the "It does not have to cost much department".....My metal arch is interesting. I bought the arch several years ago at a garage sale down the street. It had been a Christmas decoration, and now the bulbs were mostly out and the clips that held them to the arch were mostly gone. I wanted the arch! $3 I paid for it.....then found a metal arch 8 feet tall will not go into a Town Car! I walked it the three blocks home, holding on to both sides and hanging the top of the arch over my head.....should have gotten a picture of that! I then tightened the connections of the arch, and out came a spray can of white Rust-O-Leum....(sp).

When done it has served now for three years as my sidewalk arch and, while showing a rust spot or two near the screws holding it together, it is doing quite nicely. I figure I have about $2 per-year in the thing, including paint!

I love it when a plan comes together!

By-the-way.....As one might guess from my flag flying above.....I am a Proud American who celebrates Memorial Day.....A Salute to every American Soldier.....Coast Guard, Marine, Army, Navy, Air Force....and a special remembrance of my Father, 1lt Paul K. DeLand, Sr., a multi-purple heart veteran of WWII. You are remembered Dad, each and every day!

Duke (Lt. However, this was the 1st time ever we saw the trail in the snow. It was both unique and scary. The road is a single-lane, one-way trip from towndown Gatlinburg (Stop Light #8) East into the hills. We have loved it every trip, but snow adds a new dimension.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_zzzjoDg3M4Y/Rh6CVX-EGoI/AAAAAAAAAH0/f3bfeVezZ4Q/s400/Mountain+road+in+the+snow.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5052619135679470210" />Atop the trail there is a foot trail off into the woods which looked quite remote as we saw it appear out of the snow falling on us.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_zzzjoDg3M4Y/Rh6CGn-EGnI/AAAAAAAAAHs/XIqaiLhiMSo/s400/Trail+into+the+woods.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5052618882276399730" />Here is one of the cabins left by the folks who lived here more than 100 years ago. You HAVE TO go there at least once!

This 1st pic is of one of the cabins at Cades Cove....actually lived in by the folks who lived, farmed, etc. here in the 1700s and 1800s....The fence is typical of what they built.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_zzzjoDg3M4Y/Rh57eX-EGiI/AAAAAAAAAHE/IXCh5hg-K7A/s400/Cabin+w+Wood+fence.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5052611593716898338" />This is a creek....not significant, given the hundreds in the Smokies....except it is one of those in Cades Cove. The flowers were to suffer damage beyond belief within 24 hours as the temps plummeted to the low 20s!
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_zzzjoDg3M4Y/Rh5OPX-EGbI/AAAAAAAAAGM/QZhVhE3t6D4/s400/Campground+Flowers.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5052561857995610546" />
On the Road from Gatlinburg to Cherokee....across the Smokey Mountains, it got C-O-L-D!!!! Man it was cold....biting cold...Here is Duchess wrapped in leather and a sweatjacket underneath! She stands beside our "Iron Horse" the little Suzuki jeep. We bought her new in 1999, and now they no longer make them (or at least sell them in the USA!)...so we keep her as she is just fun as a vehicle....I recently had the tranny rebuilt as the synchros were failing....while at it we also did the clutch and rear main seal which had begun to leak. She drives like a dream again, and I plan to keep her til she falls off her wheels! She only has 40,000 miles after 7 years.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_zzzjoDg3M4Y/Rh5N8X-EGaI/AAAAAAAAAGE/ybPr4SFjZok/s400/Duchess+w+Sideroad+Suzie.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5052561531578096034" />Ice covered much of the rock face in the mountains as the cold invaded everything!
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_zzzjoDg3M4Y/Rh5Nw3-EGZI/AAAAAAAAAF8/EhoccsAvReo/s400/Ice+on+Rocks.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5052561334009600402" />Even the mountaintops showed the cold....the pic is of the mountains from just outside Gatlinburg....with frost covering the trees atop the mountains. We have sailed twice now on Princess and once on Carnival. When I checked one of the rating systems on cruises they rated both Princess ships 4.5 out of 5 stars. Our Carnival ship rated 3.5 stars. The difference shows.

Princess has some really fine folk, and do a great job with food, etc.

We will be meeting this Saturday (tomorrow) to review our cruise together (the 10 of us) and then will begin hopefully planning our next excursion.

Meanwhile Duchess and I are looking a spending a week of timeshare at Grand Cayman Island to try their restaurants, etc.

I'll post some of the pics from the pro bowl trip in a few days. In place of scenery, et al, there were shots of our group in full party mode! Strange....

The 1st pic is of the newly-finished piers at Cozumel. They have recovered from the disastrous hurricane of two years ago, and are back in business. The downtown is being rebuilt with new buildings, and new scenes to absorb. Here is a picture of our docking at Cozumel's new pier. To the left is Carnival's "Miracle", based out of Tampa. Straight ahead and at an angle is the side of a Norwegian Cruise Lines ship, and of course the balconies at right belong to our "Star Princess"

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_zzzjoDg3M4Y/ReVsua7835I/AAAAAAAAADQ/O43RcFrAjxw/s400/Carnival+Miracle+Norwegian+ship+n+Star+Princess+at+Dock.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5036551303044325266" />
Lunch at Senor Frog's....some of our members had not yet gotten their burgundy red T-shirt with the "University of Senor Frog Drinking Team" emblazoned upon it. The place just reeks of money and happy people. Such a 180 degree turn from Ocho Rios. This triple island colony of Britain has 52,000 residents, and 300 plus banks! It is neat, clean and the people were smiling and joking. The small cove pictured here is typical of what we saw in water and sand. Bright, clear, clear water and lots of lovely people all around.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_zzzjoDg3M4Y/ReQw-67831I/AAAAAAAAACc/lnH8yMnWPhI/s400/Cove+on+Grand+Cayman.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5036204140837789522" />
We visited the Butterfly Farm, quite an experience...while too tame for some, it was educational and the insects were gorgeous. This pair of 4 inch butterflys are in the process of mating. After they are done (up to 24 hours folks!) the male has finished his work, and he retires to set-out plates of sliced fruit, fermenting in the heat and sun, where he drinks heavily, and actually gets "drunk" on the fermented fruit juice. The female has to find a place to attach her eggs to a tree of the ONLY type of fruit that particular butterfly eats (each type eats different leaves). Typical, the lady works, the guy parties! I will do a set of butterfly pics later...probably in a couple of days.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_zzzjoDg3M4Y/ReQwrq7830I/AAAAAAAAACU/zGh_Tab9VpY/s400/Butterfly+Mating.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5036203810125307714" />
Of course, you had to know with our group we ended up in Senor Frog's Pub and Grill where we indulged. The reality for me is best projected by the joy I felt leaving the place in the evening....
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_zzzjoDg3M4Y/ReLy1q783xI/AAAAAAAAABo/EmNdM6eQ0Ns/s400/Leaving+Ocho+Rios+at+Sunset.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5035854337226366738" />
On docking, the picture of huge homes on the hillside gave us great anticipation as to the things we'd be seeing. Duchess and I were to have joined some of the group for horseback riding and an actyual ride into the surf. Duchess, most unfortunately, fell in the motorhome enroute to the ship and her shoulder was too sore to allow riding....we opted for a bus tour. MISTAKE!
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_zzzjoDg3M4Y/ReLypa783wI/AAAAAAAAABg/DmuyKasKeos/s400/Houses+on+Hillside.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5035854126772969218" />
Things in Ocho Rios were generally squallor! Homes were unfinished, falling down, etc. People seemed listless and simply meandering about. Here is the "James Bond" dock where we landed. Rusty and old, it was named as it was used for the filming of "Dr. No", the James Bond flick.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_zzzjoDg3M4Y/ReLyc6783vI/AAAAAAAAABY/_pc2zvuJ0ZY/s400/James+Bond+Dock+from+Movie+Dr+No.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5035853912024604402" />
The hospital we drove by resembled a decrepit old Tampa warehouse. The famed "Dunn's Falls" we viewed from a back entrance where forty or so vendors were VERY pushy about their wares, and even snapped this picture of the Duchess and I. We escaped mostly unharmed....but could have lost a lot of money if we'd been less than determined.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_zzzjoDg3M4Y/ReLwtK783uI/AAAAAAAAABQ/qQlTfDq0tnw/s400/Sandra+Paul+at+Falls+Ocho+Rios.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5035851992174223074" />
Our drive was punctuated by numerous stops for "opportunities" to buy things. It is currently ranked #4 in heart transplants in the nation. In addition TGH is ranked in the top 20 in volume for lung, kidney, pancreas, and liver transplants. The survival rate for Tampa General transplant patients is at to well above the national average. It is also the ONLY hospital in the United States which has been certified in 11 specialties by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO, the federal hospital certification body)! Quite a place to have available when you need a tuneup or major medical work! Actually it is four villages....a Seaside village, A Ski Resort, A Farm, and one large village of 1900 type houses. All told there are 47 buildings and a lot of added small stuff.

My missing piece has been a train. Today I found a small one, and have it temporarily set up on a coffee table to test it. It is complete with sounds (whistle, choo-choo, train rolling along tracks, etc.) and lights in the engine and passenger car...all in Christmas colors....including the last car, a Christmas Tree car.

Now I have the bug so construction will begin this week. Two 3 X 6 foot tables, and one has a 2nd deck above.

More later.....Whoo-Whoo!

Duke

Final Beach Shots

Two final memories of our October beach time, 2006.....
The lovely sunset viewed across the volleyball net at the resort, with The Duchess and some friends watching.

"Morning Flight!" We simply call them "skitter birds" in honor of the fast legs.

Life is always good at the beach!

Duke

"Cafe Racer" & A Storm in Madeira Beach!

Still at the beach. Found my "internet" location as the timeshare is in the process, but yet does not have wireless. The place is an amazing place to visit.....called: Cafe Racer! It is a coffee shop with motorcycles, tables for lunch/jig saw puzzles, and wireless.....plus a lot more. Stop in at Madeira Beach....on Madeira Way, just off the main road back to the mainland. Lovely place I like a lot....but still stick with "one shot" in my coffee (They offer up to 4!!!) The speed with which this arch has covered has amazed me. They grow in clusters and are highlighted, for the most part, as they appear on the newer, bright green leaves of the vines. I love their delicate look and the Jasmine which blooms in the Spring will provide a lovely scent which I am told is sometimes fragrant for up to a block away.

Duke

Booker Creek Is Close and Fine!

The picture possibilities are endless at Booker Creek Park (in Pinellas County, but easily accessible from West Hillsborough....out through Oldsmar.

The Duchess and I spent part of yesterday afternoon there and gathered a lot of pics...

This is the beginning of a wooden walkway over one of the swampy areas in the park....actually there are several. The critters were there by hundreds. Many were the squirrels who tracked our every move, obviously anticipating we would suddenly throw out a feast of some kind for them. The squirrels and others creatures here are often fed by visitors. They learn to anticipate this feeding.

Perched in a small tree waterside on the small lake in the park was this bird which, as we neared, spread its wings tentatively in anticipation of a rush by us. All in all it was a wonderful outing.
